Art Journal Challenge – Week 2 – Happy Camper – Night Sky Using Acrylics

Week two of my 52 week art journaling challenge complete! My theme for this page was ‘Happy Camper’, as I am heading off camping this week. I wanted to do a night sky scene but wasn’t sure how to go about it to start.

At first I intended to use the blue set of Gelatos I picked up for my December Haul, but I just couldn’t get them dark enough for my liking. So next I tried watercolouring with my Distress Inks, but again, I just couldn’t get the depth I wanted and I also don’t really know how to watercolour! So I set off into the world of Youtube in search of inspiration and I found several videos that used the same colours to get the night sky I was looking for. But… they were all using acrylic paint, of which I didn’t have. Of the videos I watched, they all used the same method of painting the whole page black to start, then blending from top to bottom using Ultramarine Blue, Light Blue and White. So I had a look online and found a set of 12 acrylic paints for only $5 at Kmart, and it had the four colours or similar that I was looking for. Now I know that $5 paint is hardly going to be a quality product, but having never used them before, I wasn’t ready to (or frankly had the money to) invest in anything better just yet. I would see how it went with these first.

First I’ll say that I had a lot of fun with the acrylics and will definitely be looking at purchasing them in the future. I know that those in the know will probably have something to say of my attempts but I am pretty happy with how it turned out. My trees leave a bit to be desired but knowing how much I enjoyed doing this page, I will be looking into learning a lot more about painting with acrylics.

But I thought that overall, the night sky looks great and using a toothbrush to spatter the watered down white paint for the stars worked a treat. I was also pleased with the shading on the moon using Distress Ink, which is a little hard to see in the photo’s.

I finished it off with a stamped tent I coloured with Copics and the sentiment ‘Adventure Awaits’ which I stamped on tissue paper and adhered with Mod Podge for a different effect.

Overall I am happy with my second page. The night sky never fails to awe me and that’s what I wanted to show. I do feel as though I may return to this page at a later date though. We’ll see.

Thanks so much for reading and watching everyone! I really do appreciate it. πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
